“Nothing ever goes away until it teaches us what we need to know.” – Pema Chodron
I don’t know about you, but this quote resonates loudly with me. It certainly has been my personal experience that the universe continually brings things back around until I learn whatever it is I am supposed to from it…whether or not I want to be a willing participant in the process. Regardless of if it happens over the course of a few hours, days or years, when life wants to teach you something it will do exactly that, despite any efforts on your part to the contrary. At least, as I have said, that has been my experience…
When you think about it, it’s actually an interesting phenomena…you go about your day making decisions as they come along, often not really thinking about the bigger picture as it relates to those decisions…then before you know it you find yourself at the crossroads of some of those same decisions all over again. Why? Because life isn’t done with you on that subject. You haven’t learned what you need to from it.
Think about it…have you ever had a sense that you should do some specific task, but talk yourself out of it only to find yourself presented with opportunities to reexamine that decision over and over again? And those additional opportunities to revisit the topic may not happen for months or years, but the topic keeps coming up in your life? That’s a good sign that life is trying really hard to teach you a lesson surrounding that topic. And the lesson could be anything from “this is the direction you should go with your life” to “this is an area you need to grow in”. No matter the lesson, there’s one to be had and that’s why it continually comes back around. When we don’t learn that lesson, we are destined to repeat those same events and net very similar results until we finally reach a point when we “get it”.
I suppose this phenomena, as I have taken to calling it, is a bit of a blessing in disguise, giving us countless opportunities to learn and grow. “Do overs” if you will. And I suppose that is ultimately what life is all about…learning and growing. What it comes down to though is learning to listen to what’s in our hearts…trusting our intuition or instincts and doing what feels right. Trust yourself, take the leap of faith, follow your heart…but above all, don’t be afraid to grow and change. Life is one great big lesson from which to learn. Embrace it and do great things!
